Why we put the AI on Android instead of an embedded board

Putting a big screen and a voice AI together on Android gives more development freedom and more product space than embedded hardware, and parents accept it far more readily than a tablet. That is a conclusion from actually shipping an Android projector with a voice remote, not a preference.

What is on it now

Two things. Voice conversation that generates a picture book, and language learning.

The conversation flow is that a child talks to an AI character through the remote, and when the conversation ends the system generates a picture book from it and throws it on the wall. The words, the images and the story all come from what was just said, so the child watches their own idea turn into something concrete.

Why we cut the read-aloud test

Language learning originally included a read-aloud check, where the child reads a word and the AI judges the pronunciation. I removed it deliberately.

The reason is direct. Children do not pronounce cleanly to begin with, so a small recognition error fails them, they get frustrated quickly, and they stop wanting to play. This is the same class of problem we hit elsewhere. Speech recognition in a scenario requiring exact matching is a risk in a hardware product, not a feature.

The test became multiple choice with the remote. Up, down, left, right to pick an answer, no pronunciation judgement, and much less frustration.

Why not just use a tablet

This came up in real sales conversations. Parents visibly resist tablets and phones for children, and the reason is not the software. It is that the situation is uncontrolled. The child curls up in a corner with a screen, the parent cannot easily call them back, and cannot see what is happening.

A projector on a wall is visible to the whole room. The parent does not have to supervise continuously, because the child's activity is transparent by default.

That visibility is the actual reason some parents pay for this category. It is not a spec, it is a property of the situation.

What Android buys you

Running Android underneath changes iteration speed substantially. On embedded hardware, adding a feature usually means firmware changes, coordinating with the module vendor, and waiting on an integration cycle, so an idea can take months to reach a device. On Android, wiring in a new AI capability or changing an interaction can be tested on real hardware within days, and if it does not work you change direction.

For a small company that difference in iteration speed matters more than most spec comparisons.

Where a big screen goes next

The two current features are a starting point. Once a big screen and voice are genuinely connected, plenty stacks on top. Several people generating an image or a short video together, games with AI participation, generated results thrown on the wall as shared family content. None of that happens when everyone is looking at their own phone, and all of it happens naturally on one shared screen.

A big screen pulls people into the same place. In a moment when everyone is staring at a personal device, that is a differentiator rather than a nostalgia.
